There are steps you can take on your own to monitor your septic tank and keep an eye out for any signs of arising problems. The first is to check the drain field for any smells that would indicate something is wrong. These smells are caused by gasses building up in the septic system such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and methane. A properly-maintained septic tank should be odor-free. The second step to a self inspection is to check the sludge levels in the tank through the tank cover. Locate the outlet device in the tank and see if the levels are within 3 inches of the bottom of the device. If so, your tank needs to be pumped. Other parts of the system to check are the tank vent, lid, and alarm. These can be done by yourself, but it is always best to have a professional come and take a look.
